Are you building a home?

Don’t get wrapped up in paying for your much desired additional extras, such as Custom Woodworking, Fireplace Surrounds, Built-in Shelves, Custom Kitchen Pantry, Wall-trees, Wainscoting, Garage Storage and so much more. If you wrap it into your mortgage you’ll be paying for it the next 15 or 30 years. You are much better off keeping the cost of your new home lower at purchase time, saving on property taxes. And, if you’re a cash buyer, thus having no mortgage these additional extras are much better off being done later.

Why?

Cost is one issue, however, living in your new home for awhile will improve your decision making on those additional wants and needs…. that much better. We hear this from our homeowners all the time, not a week goes bye that we don’t.

We know it is exciting to go to the Builder’s Design Center to pick out all those wonderful new features, like the style and color of bathrooms fixtures right down to the faucets, cabinet hardware, flooring and lighting fixtures soon to be in your new home…

But do not have your builder install items like fireplace surrounds, custom built-in cabinets, designer kitchen pantries, wall-trees or custom cabinets unless your builder is a custom home builder. Please note, because you have a home builder constructing your new home that doesn’t make them custom builders. We see new homeowners make this error more often than not, buyer beware. Very few of this areas home builders have a “finish or master carpenter” on your job. Another note, we do absolutely no work for home builders, we only work directly with our homeowners.

Not long ago we were called by a builder who had his labors attempt to install a Shiplap Wall Design the home buyers wanted. Now mind you it was an interesting an complex design the homeowners wanted, going up a stairway and turning the corners at each end, needless to say it was installed badly and we were asked to fix it. We agreed to do it, but not for the reason you might think. You see, while we were there looking at this job the homeowners popped in…. and it is really a small world, we got to talking and it turns out I coached their son in baseball.

So if you are wanting those special items that make a home “Your Home” like a beautiful fireplace surround or built-in shelves or maybe custom woodworking like a built in desk or garage storage please do yourself a favor and leave it to a finish carpenter. By the way the Shiplap Wall Design came out gorgeous.
