Owning a home is the American dream, isn’t it? Of course it is. However, there is also another truth that goes along with home ownership, the work on your American dream is never done. So ask yourself, what homeowner doesn’t have a “honeydew” list? Funny, how I remember my mother always leaning (some people called it yelling) at my dad to get this or that done.
One issue always came up about that honeydew list, (correct spelling, honey-do) who was going to get it done? This answer can be tricky for a few good reasons… One, the homeowner believes they can get the job done themselves, ((REALITY CHECK)), more than 70% of homeowners shouldn’t own a home because they just aren’t handy fixing or building anything. Don’t believe me, go to a big box home improvement store early on a Saturday or Sunday morning and observe the confused look on most faces, especially in the raw wood and tool departments, ….sad but very true.
Secondly, the homeowner quickly realizes they don’t own or even know what specialized tools they will need, but, if they do, are they buying tools and equipment they may only use once and then it collects dust in your garage until you have a garage sale, an sell it for pennies on the dollar spent to purchase said tool. Does this make sense? You know the answer… NO! However, the homeowner does it anyway, maybe to show they can do the honey-do list, I mean you have your pride, maybe they really can do it, but this scenario leaves them with a garage full of tools and equipment they most likely never use again, but what the heck these tools look cool hanging on our new pegboard or we can always lend them to our friends and neighbors.
How much did you spend? Keep track you’re going to be shocked, an not in a good way. We can go on and on why most homeowners should never consider to do any big job around the house themselves. Not to mention your completed project should add value to your castle, not detract! My dad taught his son’s a lot, family first of course but next was value and one of those values was, “do what you know how to do, and pay people to do what you don’t.”
Which brings me to the reason for writing this blog in the first place. You still looking for that laundry room makeover, maybe those closest built-in shelves, a pantry makeover, enlarge that deck or that wall unit in the FROG room upstairs.
No matter what project you need or want done, consider doing this work in the winter months. You may want to revisit this, but do it soon… WHY? Even the busiest, most highly regarded custom woodworking and design shops slow down in the winter months, and this slow down might get you a little better quote on your project, plus getting it done quicker … some outdoor projects are best done in cooler temperatures, like decks for instance. So consider those tougher “honey-do” items now, so you can enjoy a peaceful quiet spring.
Thank you all for making Coastal Improvements NC your go to place for projects you want done right…
